Global Clinical Trials in Rare Disease Indications During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The challenges biotech companies typically face when enrolling patients in clinical trials were dramatically increased during 2020 and the first half of 2021 when a global pandemic was layered on top. Some of these COVID-specific challenges included clinical site closures, patients not going in for tests/dosing, distribution of clinical product to sites and many, many more. Some companies, like Imara, effectively responded to these challenges by quickly implementing unique approaches. In fact, Imara has made substantial progress recruiting for its ongoing Phase 2b clinical trials, including fully recruiting patients with sickle cell disease for its Ardent trial and the transfusion-dependent arm of the Forte trial for patients with beta-thalassemia. Imara was able to arrive at this achievement while following through on a goal to hold clinical trials in areas with underserved and diverse communities. During this presentation Rahul Ballal, Imara’s CEO, will discuss the challenges the industry faced and provide specific examples of Imara’s unique approaches in creating diverse, global clinical trials.

Fireside Chat with Michael Petroutsas, Senior Vice President, Head of US Oncology Business Unit at GSK: How Inclusive Communications are Central to Creating a Better Cancer Care System for the Future
The pandemic has caused people to postpone or altogether skip visits to the doctor, often delaying the diagnosis of health issues and drastically impacting cancer care. Recent data published in JAMA underscores this impact: New diagnoses of eight common cancer types declined significantly from the start of the pandemic through March 2021.

Underserved populations and women have felt this impact disproportionately. To better support diverse populations during this time – regardless of race or ethnicity, gender, age or income – healthcare and pharma organizations have had to adapt. This has included hastening digital transformation efforts and changing the ways they communicate with – and provide support – to different populations.

In this fireside chat, Michael Petroutsas, Senior Vice President and Head of U.S. Oncology at GSK, will offer a firsthand look into:
  • The delays in early cancer diagnoses and initiation of treatment the pandemic caused, particularly for people in underserved populations and women
  • The urgent work left to do in not just getting people back to care – but also re-making cancer care to better serve all populations
  • The importance of tailoring patient communications to reach diverse audiences
  • How GSK leads with empathy, viewing those with cancer as people first and patients second
